WALL STREET INSTITUTE FIRST TO PUT ENGLISH LANGUAGE CURRICULUM TO THE TEST

Baltimore, MD – November 14, 2007 - Wall Street Institute, the world’s premier provider of English language instruction, announced today the findings from a study analyzing the company’s English language training curriculum. In an industry with little global benchmarking, Wall Street Institute has subjected its proprietary and innovative English education coursework to rigorous and extensive standards testing. The landmark study, conducted with the support of the renowned University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, demonstrated that Wall Street Institute’s English language curriculum is aligned to the globally recognized Common European Framework Reference for Languages (CEFR) English Proficiency Scales.

This study is a first of its kind, and a milestone for global English language instruction. It is expected to set a new benchmark for measuring the effectiveness of English language training centers and programs. Its significance is that Wall Street Institute is the first major global ESL provider to set out to verify objectively that their coursework maps accurately and consistently to internationally recognized standards of English language proficiency.

“This study has global implications for English language instruction. People who want to learn English need to have some assurance that they are studying in an institution with valid and proven instruction and assessment methods. With this study, Wall Street Institute is among the first English language training organizations in the world to be able to demonstrate to students that their courses lead to the achievement of an internationally recognized standard of English,” said Tim Daniels, Chairman and CEO, Wall Street Institute International.

The CEFR framework, first adopted by the 36 member countries of the Council of Europe in 2001, has emerged as the leading global standard for assessing an individual’s English language proficiency. “The Common European Framework provides a clear and objective basis for describing levels of language proficiency throughout the world,” said Mr. Mike Milanovic, CEO, University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

The study was conducted in two phases over two years. The first phase demonstrated a close correspondence between students’ levels of English according to Wall Street Institute’s own internal assessment and their scores in the University of Cambridge Business Language Testing Service (BULATS) Examination (which University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations themselves have aligned with the CEFR). The second phase further demonstrated that Wall Street Institute's curriculum is well-grounded and effective by establishing an accurate correspondence between the Wall Street Institute curriculum and students’ language capabilities and the CEFR English Proficiency standards.

Although the CEFR provides an international standard for English as a Second
Language instruction, the fragmented ESL marketplace lacks a standardized curriculum. "University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations is happy to see the completion of this study, which is the first such study from an English language school with a global presence of which University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations is aware," said Sean Hayde, Assistant Director of the Business Support Group, University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
