Your Monthly Advice: How to Improve English in General Prepared by: Dr.English |
There are many things you can do; above all, adopt a positive attitude towards language learning.
- Mistakes are part of the learning process, so learn from them.
- Interaction with teachers and other students provide you with the necessary language, which will result in faster and better production.
- Ask whenever you don’t understand something.
- Consider your teacher a “facilitator” (she/he is there to help you acquire the language).
- Take advantage of all the CCs and SC activities offered at WSI (and any other situation) to practice your English.
- Learning the language should be fun, so enjoy yourself.
Some tips good learners use:
- They make every possible effort to get their message across.
- They don’t mind making mistakes.
- They pay attention to form and try to look for patterns in the language.
- They monitor their oral production as well as that of others and try to imitate the pronunciation and cadence of native speakers.
- They try to understand the overall meaning of both oral and written pieces by paying attention to context.
- They takes risks and are willing to make guesses.
- They take advantage of every opportunity to practice.
- They have fun learning, and are interested in the process.
Some practical things you can try on your own:
- Read newspapers, magazines, whatever you can get in English, to improve your vocabulary and to broaden your understanding.
- Read for fun.
- Keep a diary (written or recorded).
- Try to contact native speakers in your country or away (you have the Vill@ge for this!).
- Keep a register of the new words, expressions, phrases, etc.
- If you need to use a dictionary, get an English-English one right from the start.
